A NOTE ABOUT THIS GUIDE
I'm so excited to be working with you and can’t wait for our time together during your family session! It’s normal to be a little nervous about your session. I always tell people that I still get nervous before having my photos taken - and I do this for a living!
Lifestyle family sessions are so important to do because you are given the opportunity to hold on to a memory for a lifetime. These moments are fleeting and savoring this journey your family is on will be a tangible way to cherish these moments for decades to come.
I love that I am able to document you and your family, how you are right in this moment.
Lifestyle family sessions are a bit different that the traditional posed sessions. I want to showcase how your family interacts, loves, and plays together. There will be one or two "look at the camera" poses here and there, but the majority of our session will be candid with lots of laughter and fun!
There is a lot to think about when it comes to planning a session and since I get asked the same things over and over again, I thought it would be the most beneficial to put together a guide that walks you through everything you need to know.
I’ll cover what to wear, whether to bring pets & how to manage them, location ideas and more!
- Elly McElhannon
I get it. Having your picture taken for 1-2 hours might not be in your top-10 favorite things to do during your downtime. And at first you might feel sort of awkward being in front of the camera. But I think you’ll find that by the end of the session, it’s a lot easier than you thought, and you even had a little fun. You'll love these memories for decades to come, I promise!
A note to
I’ve found that there isn’t a “good” or “bad” time to take your photos. I normally plan sessions based on a particular “look” my client has in mind, spring flowers or fall leaves for example, or based on schedules.
Sessions typically last about an hour and a half and when when we can — I love to begin sessions about an hour and a half before sunset. I prefer to shoot when the sun is lower in the sky to avoid harsh shadows and bright sun patches. I know that time of day doesn't usually work with your little ones sleep schedule, but I know that these images at this time of day is the best of the best, so make sure to plan accordingly.
Speaking of time of day... I schedule sessions during what will be the best light of the day - which means that it’s super important to be on time. If you’re late to an evening session, we could run out of light before we’ve finished shooting and if your session takes place in the morning, the sun gets more harsh as it rises.
My dogs are huge part of our family, which is why I love when families choose to incorporate pets into their session. Keep in mind that bringing a pet along often means that we’ll need to choose a pet friendly location.
I recommend planning for your pet to be at the second part of your session and then either dropping them off or having a friend take them home. We won’t use the pet in every single photo so it’s also nice to have a friend available to hold him or her in between shots.
If you’re going to bring a pet, I recommend exercising your pet before the session and bringing your pets favorite toy or treats! Depending on your pet’s fur type, it might also be a good idea to groom them before the shoot.
TIPS FOR LOOKING YOUR BEST
When picking outfits I recommend keeping in mind the word “complement” rather than “match.” For example, if Dad is wearing a blue and pink pastel plaid shirt, Mom may want to choose a long, soft blue dress. It can also be a great idea to choose “color-families,” such as pastels or jewel tones.
Long and flow-y dresses are my go-to (and what my client closet is filled with!) That gives a romantic feel to your session and a chance to wear something beautiful and unique! And don’t forget to bring a few accessories! Statement necklaces, cute shoes and classic watches are great ways to add detail to outfits. Please leave the smart watch in the car ;)

Heels lengthen legs but if your heels aren’t comfortable for walking, bring an extra pair of shoes to slip into in between shots. Most of the time (and for studio sessions!) you will be barefoot.
Softer, pastel colors tend to photograph better than bright colors - especially since bright colors could reflect on your skin. While I love bright, neon dresses, but we don’t love the neon reflection they add to your complexion.
Sleeves and flowy dresses are always romantic and beautiful, I usually recommend wearing a midi or a maxi dress so you are the most comfortable moving around and playing with your little ones.

Statement jewelry is a great way to add color or pattern to a simple dress.
Lace and tulle look amazing in photographs.
And dresses with lace sleeves are a great way to help slim arms.
Depending on your location, you might want to consider a fit and flare or a flowy dress!
They look great in walking and photos with movement.
Choose an outfit you feel comfortable in, but don’t be afraid to dress up!

Family Portrait sessions are the perfect time to enjoy a little extra pampering! Professionally done hair & makeup last longer than typical hair & makeup. They also tend to hold up better for humidity and wind.
It’s so important that you look and feel your best for your family photos - not to mention that this is a great excuse to pamper yourself, you deserve it, mama!

There will probably be times during your session when I'm shooting your hands holding or up close snuggles where fingers are in focus- which means it’s a good idea to clean up your nails before your session. I always recommend a nail polish that isn't distracting or too bright (probably best to avoid reds here.)

Simple is better when it comes to Dads. My favorite go-to is a white is neutral button up shirt. Another great option is a nice henley. I would avoid t-shirts and polos at all cost!
Softer, pastel colors tend to photograph better than bright colors - especially since bright colors could reflect on your skin.
Cozy sweaters layered over button ups are a great way to stay warm and stylish during the cooler months.

I know that coordinating outfits gets even trickier when adding in the kids clothes. My advice is to pick your outfit (moms) first, and use the tones from your dress to coordinate the overall tones of the families outfits.
Soft colors without patterns are my go-to for kids. Creams, knitwear, whites, and pastels really keep the outfits simple without being matchy.
Also, make sure that your little girls finger nail polish is removed prior to the session.

One of my favorite parts of your family portrait session is access to my client closet full of beautiful, picture perfect dresses to help make you look absolutely incredible. If you're interested in using any of these dresses, you can pick 2-3 of your favorites and I will bring them to our session. If you are local, I am also happy to drop a few off at your home prior to the session so you can pick which one you love most!
Inclement Weather
what to do if it rains
I’ll check in the week of your family session to confirm the time & location we’re meeting and the weather. I know it takes a lot of time to get ready you and your family ready for your session and it’s the worst to get dressed up and drive out to your session only to have it rain.
Let me know what works best for you all - but if the weather looks like it won’t be great, we typically try to make the call at least 12 hours in advance.
for your maternity session
A maternity session is the perfect way to celebrate the miracle of your precious little one. Let's go over some tips and advice so you get the most out of your maternity session.
Depending on how your pregnancy is unfolding, a maternity session can be really empowering or really exhausting. Sometimes, it’s a combination of the two. I feel confident in my ability to take gorgeous photographs of you regardless of whether we’re in your home or in a meadow – but I don’t want to push you beyond your physical capacity. I’d rather play it safe so that you feel relaxed enough to focus on just enjoying yourself and capturing this super special time in your life.
The day before the shoot, pack a bag of items that will support you during our session. These things could be snacks and water, extra makeup, nausea drops, or whatever else comes to mind.
As a rule of thumb, anytime between 28 and 34 weeks is a good time. But babies will arrive when they want to, so if you’re having twins or you suspect your little one might be making their big entrance into the world early, it’s safer to do it sooner rather than later.
If you’ve been pregnant before, chances are you’ll show earlier, so you could book earlier. The earlier you book, the more options we’ll have with posing and location.
answering your questions
for your Newborn session
Expect to snuggle! And, be prepared to be in most of the shots. My approach to newborn sessions is very much lifestyle. I want to capture the sacred connection between you and your precious newborn. Lifestyle newborn sessions are usually much more relaxed and baby friendly. I will never put your newborn in an unsafe, or even uncomfortable position for the sake of an artistic photo.
With that said, I always try to do light, baby-led wrapping at every newborn session. This helps me capture those sweet details (like the images below!)
Your baby is still trying to figure out where they are and what they’re doing in this big bright world. Sometimes, they’ll get a little upset and need a bit of extra loving. We may have to stop for a little feed, to change a diaper, or to give them a little pep talk before continuing on. But this is all a part of it.
Week one and two of your baby’s life is magic. Of course, all of the weeks are magic, but during these first two weeks, newborns are squishy, sleep more, and are still adjusting to the world outside of the womb. In order for us to get organized for a shoot this soon after their birthday, we will book your due date.
In a lot of cases, babies will arrive whenever they want to and I couldn’t possibly expect them to abide by our schedule. Once your baby is born, give me a call/text as soon as you can and we can lock in a time and date.

for your Family session
Make sure to have everything laid out the day before. So you're not scrambling to get ready.
I like to have a mix of traditional, look-at-the-camera, photos and also plenty of candid moments that showcase your family's beautiful emotions. Having fun, playing games, and making it super fun for the kiddos is how I am able to snap a few of those traditional poses.
Depending on your family and your preference, you can expect your gallery to be about 30% images to be smiling at the camera and 70% focused on joy, love, and laughter.
variety at your session
Have fun on the drive to the session, keep everyone in a happy mood :)
I am not above bribery here... don't forget to pack your child's favorite snack and water for after the session, or if we need a break
Talk about the session in the days leading up to it and how fun it will be. Make sure to mention there will be lots of snuggles!
Book your wardrobe consult with me 2 weeks in advance so I can help you plan your family outfits and answer any questions
I know that having happy tots during your family session is top of the list. The first thing you can to in order to achieve that is to relax. Plan ahead so you are not stressed and rushing to your family session. And make sure you are in a great mood too!
Some of my family sessions can take as little as 15 minutes, while others take a full 2 hours. It is all about getting your child comfortable with me and the camera.
Biggest tip during your session is to keep smiling! I can't tell you how many images have been ruined when a fussy child gives me a big grin, but dad is frustrated in the background. No matter what is happening, always keep smiling :)
Immediately following your families photo session, I upload the files to 2 backup drives and on the cloud. Next begins the process of picking the best of the best images, hand editing them, and uploading the images into your personal online gallery for you to view, print, and download. Start to finish, the process takes about 2-3 weeks.
I know that this guide is long and hopefully it covers everything you need to know to prep for your engagement session! However if there is something we missed, or you need a recommendation feel free to email
